Geared toward second graders and their SOL learning objectives for the study of China, this program consists of three components: our School Programs Educator’s in-class presentation, a resource trunk on temporary classroom loan (complete with interdisciplinary lesson plans, art supplies, visual aids, books, and maps), and a tour of the LCVA’s Rowe Collection of Chinese Art with follow-up hands-on activities at the LCVA. The LCVA provides funding for buses as needed for the trip to Farmville to view the collection. This past year over 550 children participated in this program.
This program (targeting third-graders) was modeled on Have Art, Will Travel – China. The Africa module includes related, age-appropriate reading (Anansi the Spider: A Tale of the Ashanti), thematic discussions, and art activities such as mask making and geometric textile design. The tour component highlights the LCVA’s extensive collection of African Art, which includes objects representing 59 cultures from 17 countries.
