SUMMARY:Flapper Fashion of the 1920s: A Gallery Talk with the Curator
DESCRIPTION:LCVA welcomes bustle textiles founder Ashley Webb as host of its first Art After Dark of the new year. The exclusive gallery talk will take place on Wednesday\, February 7 at 6:00 pm. \nThis program is an opportunity for participants to tour the LCVA’s popular current exhibition\, Flapper Fashion of the 1920s\, with Webb\, the exhibition’s curator. \nFlapper Fashion of the 1920s showcases over 30 period dresses worn by the everyday American woman between 1920 and 1929\, placing them in the social and cultural contexts of the day. \nWebb\, a Longwood University alumna\, is the owner of bustle textiles maintains several ongoing collections and research-related projects for museums\, artists\, and private collectors in and around the Roanoke area in addition to working full-time as the Curator of Collections and Exhibitions with the Roanoke History & O. Winston Link Museums\, and acting as Registrar for the Moss Arts Center at Virginia Tech\, and as an art handler with the Taubman Museum of Art. \nArt after Dark replaces the formal lecture format normally associated with museums with interdisciplinary activities. These evening gatherings have a relaxed atmosphere that encourages engaging conversation. This program is completely free of charge and open to the public. SUMMARY:Exhibition: Flapper Fashion of the 1920s
DESCRIPTION:With the end of World War I in 1918 came great social\, economic\, and cultural changes that reverberated throughout America in the 1920s. The rejection of social formalities and the rise of women’s independence and individuality directly affected women’s fashion. Gone were the heavily corseted and petticoated silhouettes seen at the turn of the century\, replaced by simplistic tubular\, shapeless\, and androgynous garments in economical fabrics. While simplicity in construction typified both day and eveningwear\, the latter were embellished with ornate beadwork\, sequins\, and embroidery\, culminating in the iconic flapper dresses for which the decade is remembered today. This exhibit showcases over 30 period dresses worn by the everyday American woman between 1920 and 1929\, and places them in the social and cultural contexts of the day. \nFlapper Fashion of the 1920s is guest curator by Ashley Webb ‘07 from bustle textiles.

SUMMARY:Reflections of the Heart: Eldridge Bagley – 50 Years of Painting
DESCRIPTION:Eldridge Bagley began painting fifty years ago while he was still living with his parents on their farm in rural Lunenburg County\, Virginia. Bagley often depicts the substance and meaning of a vanishing small-town and agrarian lifestyle. Relationships with family\, friends\, neighbors\, religion\, and the land are important themes in this retrospective exhibition. \n“I can’t live in the past\,” Bagley told a news writer\, “but I do know . . .that there are traditions\, convictions\, and values that never change and are worth preserving.” He never set out to be a historian\, but his audience recognized intuitively that “history is a genre of memory.” His artistic journey over the course of the past fifty years affirms that he is truly a historian of the heart. \nOpening Reception: December 9\, 2022 5:30 to 8 p.m. with Early Entry for Friends & Partners at 5 p.m. \nReflections of the Heart: Eldridge Bagley – 50 Years of Painting is made possible by our sponsors\, Brad Watson and Davenport & Co.\, Farmville.
