SUMMARY:Bad Kitty Does Not Like Art Museums
DESCRIPTION:Art museums are great! You can see many wonderful things\, the curator exclaimed. \nBad Kitty does not agree. Her dislike of them remained. \nCould a visit change her mind? Would that do? \nDo you want to see another’s point of view? \nEach has a story\, and so do you. \nFor a moment Bad Kitty thought: Okay\, Okay\, but I still don’t see the hullabaloo. \nGoing inside\, the AC was on. So far\, this is pretty cool. \nHer temperament took a break: The paintings are nice\, but that is something I could make. \nInside you’re an artist! The docent explained: \nJuxtapose yourself with the art you see. You can make it\, but so can she. \nKitty thought it over\, how could that be? Seeing something new\, maybe that is the key? \nLots of pieces to view! Something old\, something blue\, and something with a kangaroo! \nMuch to see! So much to learn! What else could we discern? The art from… \nNick Bruel would be cool! \nOpen the doors to the LCVA to see his art. \nPurrfect stories and lessons from the heart. \nQuestions arise and stories unfold\, \nReading his books there is much to behold. \nSuper great pictures worth a Fabergé! \nThank you\, Bad Kitty\, for visiting today. \nUnderstanding your dismay is okay! A good change is underway\, maybe next time we’ll try the ballet? \nVisual art can mend\, pretend\, blend\, defend\, and transcend. \nWould you recommend to a friend? \nXylophone! \nYes! Oh\, that’s wonderful news. \nZoom on over\, and see some new views. \n  \n  \nBad Kitty Does Not Like Art Museums highlights works of art from author and illustrator Nick Bruel. For over twenty years\, his stories have connected with children and adults alike. His whimsical narratives teach valuable life lessons through humor and the curious Bad Kitty. \nThough she wasn’t always a bad cat\, she just didn’t want to eat asparagus\, horseradish\, spinach\, or zucchini. She wanted an assortment of anchovies\, hippo hamburgers\, rhino ravioli\, or shark sushi. She may not have been as patient as she should have been\, but that’s okay. She is learning – she is just a little kitty. \nAnd Bad Kitty grows up\, just like we do. She goes on vacation\, takes a test\, gets a bath\, gets a phone\, and even runs for president. These stories teach that when times get tough\, we figure out ways to persevere and succeed\, or how to handle disappointment. \nBad Kitty Does Not Like Art Museums is an invitation to find your own growth\, revisit something you don’t like\, and have some laughs. The LCVA\, in conjunction with the Virginia Children’s Book Festival\, asks that you don’t claw the curtains\, overturn litter boxes\, or ruin any rugs. \nThis exhibition is the eight iteration of the LCVA’s annual Arts and Letters exhibition series showcasing the best in the art of children’s literature\, which is proudly presented in conjunction with the Virginia Children’s Book Festival. \n  \n \nImage Credit: \nNick Bruel\nBad Kitty Does Not Like Art Museums\n2024 \nInk\, watercolor\, and gouache on multimedia paper.\n7″x5 1/8″\nCourtesy of the artist

SUMMARY:Of Time\, and the Town
DESCRIPTION:Of Time\, and the Town from filmmaker David Ellsworth poetically depicts twenty years of changes and constants in the built environment of Farmville\, Virginia and in the rural areas surrounding it. The film’s super-8 film images bear witness to how everyday locales provide markers of the town’s social evolution. A young couple labors to renovate an abandoned 19th century school and make it their home while the town’s previously shuttered all-Black high school finds new life as a civil rights museum documenting the 1950s student strike that helped integrate the county’s schools. Children grow as one-hundred-year-old oak trees fall. Excerpts from the town’s AM radio station provide a sonic touchstone that complements the film’s evocative sound design. \nThe Longwood Center for the Visual Arts (LCVA) welcomes the community to an opening reception on Friday\, September 6 from 5:30 – 8 pm; early entry for Friends & Partners at 5 pm. This exhibition will be on view from September 6\, 2024—January 21\, 2025. \nAbout LCVA: \nThe Longwood Center for the Visual Arts presents a rotating program of inspiring and conversation-starting exhibitions. Admission to LCVA and its programs is—and always has been—free for all. It is located at the intersection of Main and Third Streets (129 North Main Street) in Farmville\, Virginia. For additional information on these exhibitions or other programs and events\, contact LCVA at 434.395.2206 or visit LCVA’s website at https://lcva.longwood.edu/. \nLCVA exhibitions and programs are made possible through the generous support of: the Wells Fargo Foundation\, the Walter J. SUMMARY:A Way of Life: The Art of Joseph “JB” Allen
DESCRIPTION:A Way of Life: The Art of Joseph “JB” Allen \nOn View: May 31 to August 28\, 2024 \nA Way of Life highlights 58 years of painting from local artist Joseph “JB” Allen. Paintings of nature\, vechiles\, and loving couples speak to larger themes of wonder\, adventure\, and experiencing life with a caring partner. His adventures certainly have perils: getting your cart stuck on train tracks\, being chased by a bull\, or hanging onto the edge of a cliff. But\, these life experiences are also full of joy: riding bikes through the country side\, sitting on the beach\, or dancing with your spouse. \nAllen started making art as a child and continued to paint occasionally as an adult. But\, in the 1980s he stopped\, feeling he wasn’t good at it anymore. However\, since retiring in 2013 (he worked at Centra Southside Hospital from age 17 to 71) he began to make art again. He now averages about a painting a week and works part-time at Hampden-Sydney College. Allen’s imaginative art making shows that stories and memories are essential to a way of life. \n  \nJoseph “JB” Allen\nIt’s so good to see you again\, 2022\nMixed media \n20.75 x 28.75\nCourtesy of the artist \n

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Flapper Fashion of the 1920s
DESCRIPTION:With the end of World War I in 1918 came great social\, economic\, and cultural changes that reverberated throughout America in the 1920s. The rejection of social formalities and the rise of women’s independence and individuality directly affected women’s fashion. Gone were the heavily corseted and petticoated silhouettes seen at the turn of the century\, replaced by simplistic tubular\, shapeless\, and androgynous garments in economical fabrics. While simplicity in construction typified both day and eveningwear\, the latter were embellished with ornate beadwork\, sequins\, and embroidery\, culminating in the iconic flapper dresses for which the decade is remembered today. This exhibit showcases over 30 period dresses worn by the everyday American woman between 1920 and 1929\, and places them in the social and cultural contexts of the day. \nFlapper Fashion of the 1920s is guest curator by Ashley Webb ‘07 from bustle textiles.

SUMMARY:Reflections of the Heart: Eldridge Bagley – 50 Years of Painting
DESCRIPTION:Eldridge Bagley began painting fifty years ago while he was still living with his parents on their farm in rural Lunenburg County\, Virginia. Bagley often depicts the substance and meaning of a vanishing small-town and agrarian lifestyle. Relationships with family\, friends\, neighbors\, religion\, and the land are important themes in this retrospective exhibition. \n“I can’t live in the past\,” Bagley told a news writer\, “but I do know . . .that there are traditions\, convictions\, and values that never change and are worth preserving.” He never set out to be a historian\, but his audience recognized intuitively that “history is a genre of memory.” His artistic journey over the course of the past fifty years affirms that he is truly a historian of the heart. \nOpening Reception: December 9\, 2022 5:30 to 8 p.m. with Early Entry for Friends & Partners at 5 p.m. \nReflections of the Heart: Eldridge Bagley – 50 Years of Painting is made possible by our sponsors\, Brad Watson and Davenport & Co.\, Farmville.
