Though the artists’ practices differ\, all three center around the physical act of creation\, the unpredictability of materials\, and embrace of when the art “speaks back.” These artists welcome intuition and the unknown. \nFrederick’s collaborative pieces with Chris Mona are rich in symbolism and layered meaning. The textured handmade paper and her imagery evoke environmental and emotional landscapes\, inviting reflection on impermanence\, time\, and transformation. Marcus’s rhythmic paintings translate fleeting sounds into permanent colors. Her compositions reverberate\, finding balance in the tension between opposites. Reiss-McCormack creates mixed-media works that blend playfulness with sincerity. Her collages are richly layered drawings that reflect a studio practice grounded in ritual and adaptability to shifting rules and forms. \nThis exhibition includes works from the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection at the University of Virginia. These pieces form a complex mosaic of translating the natural world into imagery. Their inclusion offers visitors the opportunity to see cross-cultural differences and similarities in creative processes and collaboration. DESCRIPTION:Together\, Again is a collection of magical\, familiar\, and tender moments found in the work of Cozbi A. Cabrera. This artist\, dollmaker\, quilter\, and author takes notice and finds meaning present in everyday experiences. Whether cooking a meal\, doing your hair\, or walking in the rain\, the soul is nurtured and cultivated in our mundane. \nRooted in family\, shared memories\, and the warmth from care\, Cabrera’s themes are present in a variety of mediums. Her paintings\, textiles\, and dolls bring moments of joy\, strength\, and guidance found in family and friends. These mediums\, stitched together like a quilt\, bring parts together and form moments filled with stories\, remembrance\, and hope.  \nThe world can be an unexpected and challenging place\, but with Cabrera’s stories and pictures we find gifts of wonder and treasured objects of comfort. Through this exhibition you are invited to experience the world through Cabrera’s eyes and hands – where pictures speak\, detail breathe\, and stories found on canvas and cloth reaffirm what is near and dear to our heart. \nThis exhibition celebrates the 10th iteration of the LCVA’s annual Arts and Letters exhibition series. DESCRIPTION:A Gracious Plenty: Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Jack Blanton  \n4 June — 31 August 2025  \nAn opening reception will be held Wednesday 4 June from 5 to 8 p.m.  \nThis unique collection of sensibly scaled works has found a perfect home\, where it becomes an intricate part of life in the university\, much the same as it did when it graced the residence of the collector. It continues to factor in the daily existence of residents and visitors. Its eclectic inclusions are a comprehensive textbook of artmaking processes and forms. The examples it presents are of the highest quality and will age gracefully. The birth of this collection parallels the rise to national prominence of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts. The collection presents an accurate portrayal of some of the best work emerging from Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic seaboard during the 50 or so years surrounding the turn of the century. The intact preservation of this collection should liven the blood of investigative historians. The visitors to this collection and moreover the students and faculty who are fortunate to live daily with this collection will learn from it. Some will have true aesthetic experiences\, while others will intuit the significance of their enhanced environment. They will sense the correctness and visual logic of these artworks and will carry indelible mental images into their future. SUMMARY:Winter Wonderland Free Family Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Longwood Center for the Visual Arts (LCVA) is thrilled to celebrate 19 years of the Winter Wonderland Free Family Workshop! Bundle up for the cold winter season and join the LCVA from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Saturday\, December 7 for a festive winter-themed art workshop. This free workshop contains a variety of arts and crafts activities the whole family will enjoy\, as well as light refreshments. Glitter\, glue\, and plenty of smiling volunteers will be on hand. Participants only need to bring their creativity! Children must be accompanied by an adult.\nThe 2024 Winter Wonderland Workshop is made possible by the generous support of Julie and Griff Aldrich\, Brad Watson and Jean Morris\, and the Farmville Lions Club. The event is free and no registration is required. SUMMARY:Bad Kitty Does Not Like Art Museums
DESCRIPTION:Art museums are great! You can see many wonderful things\, the curator exclaimed. \nBad Kitty does not agree. Her dislike of them remained. \nCould a visit change her mind? Would that do? \nDo you want to see another’s point of view? \nEach has a story\, and so do you. \nFor a moment Bad Kitty thought: Okay\, Okay\, but I still don’t see the hullabaloo. \nGoing inside\, the AC was on. So far\, this is pretty cool. \nHer temperament took a break: The paintings are nice\, but that is something I could make. \nInside you’re an artist! The docent explained: \nJuxtapose yourself with the art you see. You can make it\, but so can she. \nKitty thought it over\, how could that be? Seeing something new\, maybe that is the key? \nLots of pieces to view! Something old\, something blue\, and something with a kangaroo! \nMuch to see! So much to learn! What else could we discern? Oh\, that’s wonderful news. \nZoom on over\, and see some new views. \n  \n  \nBad Kitty Does Not Like Art Museums highlights works of art from author and illustrator Nick Bruel. For over twenty years\, his stories have connected with children and adults alike. His whimsical narratives teach valuable life lessons through humor and the curious Bad Kitty. \nThough she wasn’t always a bad cat\, she just didn’t want to eat asparagus\, horseradish\, spinach\, or zucchini. She wanted an assortment of anchovies\, hippo hamburgers\, rhino ravioli\, or shark sushi. She may not have been as patient as she should have been\, but that’s okay. She is learning – she is just a little kitty. \nAnd Bad Kitty grows up\, just like we do. She goes on vacation\, takes a test\, gets a bath\, gets a phone\, and even runs for president. These stories teach that when times get tough\, we figure out ways to persevere and succeed\, or how to handle disappointment. \nBad Kitty Does Not Like Art Museums is an invitation to find your own growth\, revisit something you don’t like\, and have some laughs. SUMMARY:Of Time\, and the Town
DESCRIPTION:Of Time\, and the Town from filmmaker David Ellsworth poetically depicts twenty years of changes and constants in the built environment of Farmville\, Virginia and in the rural areas surrounding it. The film’s super-8 film images bear witness to how everyday locales provide markers of the town’s social evolution. A young couple labors to renovate an abandoned 19th century school and make it their home while the town’s previously shuttered all-Black high school finds new life as a civil rights museum documenting the 1950s student strike that helped integrate the county’s schools. Children grow as one-hundred-year-old oak trees fall. Excerpts from the town’s AM radio station provide a sonic touchstone that complements the film’s evocative sound design. \nThe Longwood Center for the Visual Arts (LCVA) welcomes the community to an opening reception on Friday\, September 6 from 5:30 – 8 pm; early entry for Friends & Partners at 5 pm. SUMMARY:Art After Dark: Yoga—the Art of Being
DESCRIPTION:LCVA hosts upcoming Art After Dark: Yoga—the Art of Being \nJoin Cosima Smith at the LCVA on Tuesday\, March 26th at 6:00 for a yoga class and discussion about the practice of yoga. This program is completely free of charge and open to the public.\nNo prior yoga experience required. Be sure to wear clothing for movement and bring a yoga mat. \nWhen asked about the workshop\, Cosima stated this program will be a chance for guests “to accept and examine the self through mindful movement\, bringing awareness to the breath\, the body\, the mind\, and all their interactions. We will work on developing a non-judgmental attitude toward the body\, and lean into the teachings of Vedic tradition. In the discussion portion\, we will talk about Yoga as a method of artistic living\, the ways Americans (and the West at large) have co-opted and transformed Yogic practice\, and touch on the intimacies of a developing Yoga practice.” \nCosima Smith is a Farmville native with 15+ years of experience practicing yoga. From an early age\, their natural flexibility drew them to the practice long before their collegiate studies led them to India. After college\, they returned to Dharamsala\, India to study Yoga anatomy\, practice\, and philosophy with Indian teachers who were raised and grew within the tradition. Cosima notes that “yoga is all about recognition and exploration—the ability to dive deeper into the self\, lean into our interpersonal relations\, and offer our support to our community.” \nArt after Dark replaces the formal lecture format normally associated with museums with interdisciplinary activities. DESCRIPTION:LCVA welcomes bustle textiles founder Ashley Webb as host of its first Art After Dark of the new year. The exclusive gallery talk will take place on Wednesday\, February 7 at 6:00 pm. \nThis program is an opportunity for participants to tour the LCVA’s popular current exhibition\, Flapper Fashion of the 1920s\, with Webb\, the exhibition’s curator. \nFlapper Fashion of the 1920s showcases over 30 period dresses worn by the everyday American woman between 1920 and 1929\, placing them in the social and cultural contexts of the day. \nWebb\, a Longwood University alumna\, is the owner of bustle textiles maintains several ongoing collections and research-related projects for museums\, artists\, and private collectors in and around the Roanoke area in addition to working full-time as the Curator of Collections and Exhibitions with the Roanoke History & O. Winston Link Museums\, and acting as Registrar for the Moss Arts Center at Virginia Tech\, and as an art handler with the Taubman Museum of Art. \nArt after Dark replaces the formal lecture format normally associated with museums with interdisciplinary activities.
