Quatrefoil Dish Liao dynasty

Quatrefoil Dish

Liao dynasty (907-1125 C.E.)
stoneware with green, milky-white, and amber lead glazes
.75 x 10 x 5.75 inches
1999.17

The glazes in this quatrefoil dish are emblematic of the old-style Tang. Yet here new meets old when the Qidan people take the glazes in a different direction, applying them in a boldly graphic manner. In terms of format, this quatrefoil dish illustrates one of five distinct shapes found in Liao dynasty ceramics.
