Asterisks in the Grand Narrative of History gathers together not just artists, but also curators and institutions in the creative process. The exhibition features nine artists, spans galleries at Longwood University and Hampden-Sydney College, and is curated by Jay Simple (Visiting Assistant Professor in Photography at Longwood University) and Emma Steinkraus (Assistant Professor of Fine Art at Hampden-Sydney College).

Thornton Dial (1928-2016) was a prolific artist whose work is deeply personal and heavily laden with symbols of power, family, and struggle. Attentive observation of his work will lead the viewer through the artist’s representations, thoughts, and experiences of growing up, and living in, the American south.

For the past thirteen years, the Longwood Center for the Visual Arts has partnered with Crossroads Community Services on their annual summer camp, Camp Unity. Each year Camp Unity serves over 90 adults with a range of abilities and provides them with an opportunity to enjoy all the traditional summer camp activities while promoting a sense of community and camaraderie among the participants.

September 18, 2020 to January 3, 2021

On September 18, 2020, the Longwood Center for the Visual Arts will host a fall exhibition featuring four of Virginia Children’s Book Festival’s fan favorites – "Anthology: Elly MacKay, John Parra, LeUyen Pham, and Victoria Kann". A socially distanced opening celebration will take place on Friday, September 18 and Saturday, September 19 during the hours of 11:00am and 5:00pm, as well as on Sunday, September 20 from 1:00pm to 5:00pm. Museum visitors can drop in at any time and will be offered takeaway reception favors.

October 13, 2020 to January 3, 2021

The LCVA’s newest exhibition, Take Care by Kerri Cushman and Laura Oertel, is a collaboration created in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and is on view through January 3, 2021. Amidst the uncertainties at the beginning of the pandemic, Cushman and Oertel worked together to make sense of the quickly changing landscape. Their work invites the viewer to consider questions of safety and protection, and is rooted in community.
