SUMMARY:Virginians by Virginians: Portraiture from the Permanent Collection
DESCRIPTION:Barbara L. Bishop Gallery \n20 February – 8 November 2026 \nLongwood University has collected art since the early 1900s. Several of Longwood’s early art acquisitions were funded by class gifts\, such as the beloved Joan of Arc sculptures on view in the Rotunda. In the 1930s\, art department professor and namesake of the University’s Bedford Hall\, Virginia Bedford (1905–1983)\, began an organized effort to exhibit and acquire artworks\, primarily portraits and landscapes. By 1949\, students\, alumnae\, and friends established a named fund to purchase works by Virginians. The University officially codified its first named collection\, the Virginia Artist Collection\, in 1951. \n2026 marks the 75th anniversary of the Virginia Artist Collection.  The Collection’s breadth and depth continue to grow\, with a total of 1\,158 works by 312 artists. It is the only formal collection of art by Virginians in existence today. To honor its history\, importance\, and the talent it houses\, Virginians by Virginians highlights 30 portraits by 21 artists in the Collection spanning the 20th and early 21st centuries. The works represent a range of media\, including drawing\, painting\, printmaking\, photography\, and sculpture\, and stylistic approaches from figurative to abstract. \nThis exhibition highlights work by well-known Virginia artists (Harriet Fitzgerald\, J.J. Lankes\, Sally Mann\, and Willie Anne Wright)\, renowned folk artists (Rev. Anderson Johnson and Clinton S. Ford\, Sr.)\, Longwood faculty members (Maurice Sneller\, Jr. and Homer Springer)\, and Longwood alumni (Nan Gilbert Aman [Class of 1934] and Fred H. Bradley [Class of 1996]). The exhibition also provides insights into artistic practices\, their subjects\, and the times in which they lived. \nThe Longwood Center for the Visual Arts’ Virginia Artists Collection represents a continuum of the Commonwealth’s rich artistic and cultural history. It also serves as a means to glean insights into art and lived experiences\, while embodying the LCVA’s mission to inspire hope and beauty through the power of human imagination. \nPictured: Harriet Fitzgerald (Danville\, Virginia\, 1904–1984)\, Tommy\, 1940. SUMMARY:Close to Home: Andras Bality’s Virginia
DESCRIPTION:William T. and Harriet Butterworth (Class of 1951) Miller Gallery and Thomas Sully Gallery \n20 February–6 September 2026 \nClose to Home features twenty-five paintings by Richmonder Andras Bality (b. 1963). Capturing the breadth and depth of the Commonwealth’s natural and man-made beauty\, the paintings’ imagery spans from Tidewater to Appalachia. Bound together as a body of work by curiosity and wonder — and an aesthetic lineage tracing artists from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries — Bality offers a sublime visual poetry of place. \nBality’s work finds its anchor in the education he received at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU)\, where he earned a BFA in painting and printmaking with a minor in art history. The combination of figurative and abstract approaches used by VCU art department founder Theresa Pollak (American\, 1899–2002) and alumna Nell Blaine (American\, 1922–1996) spoke to him and solidified his own approach. While at VCU\, Bality studied at Winchester College of Art (Winchester\, England). After graduation\, he attended the Cyprus College of Art (Lempa\, Cyprus)\, where he studied plein-air painting with Tom Watt (Scottish\, b. 1951). Painting from nature proved crucial in seeing and capturing the essence of what he wanted to paint. Bality continues the practice of painting outdoors\, either finishing works completely or making sketches that he later uses in his studio. \nPictured: Andras Bality\, Rockbridge Valley\, 2025. SUMMARY:Point of Departure - 2026 Senior Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:POINT OF DEPARTURE features projects celebrating artistry\, curiosity\, and the power of the visual arts and media in a liberal arts education by Longwood University scholars. \nArtists and designers from Theatre\, Art\, and Graphic & Animation Design present a culminating portfolio inspired by personal insights\, pressing contemporary issues\, and visual communication and branding. Each project underscores the depth and connective power of the arts\, human imagination\, and creativity. SUMMARY:Aimee Joyaux: Color-Aid ®
DESCRIPTION:William T. and Harriet Butterworth (Class of 1951) Miller Gallery and Thomas Sully Gallery \n6 October 2026–30 June 2027\nCelebratory reception: 20 November 2026\, 5–8 p.m.  \nColor-Aid ® is a group of paintings that explore Aimee Joyaux’s bursting sense of urgency\, a frantic and anxious response to our new world order. Joyaux states: \nI am a concerned observer of the global artistic and political scene. The shapes of our time are shifting as environmental transformation and fluid borders refuse any static definition. I don’t feel that we are in a free fall but very little that I read is reassuring. It’s hard to feel anything but grim. Our barbarity is haunting. And yet\, art is a place for hope\, an opportunity for honesty\, an invitation to pay attention\, to request reflection\, perhaps to inspire conversation. So\, I paint. I look backwards and I look forwards. \nPlants become abstract forms to play with\, stand-ins\, excuses to engage with texture and color and act as references\, symbols of life and death\, our canaries in the coal mine. Color-Aid ® is also a consumer product. They make color swatches used by artists and designers both as indexes but also raw material. They are very fun to just look at. I love the idea of color as an aid. My use of bright color is in part an effort to give myself some energy\, hope\, and beauty. \nJoyaux’s work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally at venues including the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts\, Taubman Museum (Roanoke\, VA)\, National Women in the Arts Museum (Washington\, DC)\, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago\, among others. She earned an MFA from the University of Oregon and BA from Southern Oregon State University. \nPictured: Aimee Joyaux\, Snakes\, 2023–2025. SUMMARY:A Small Piece of a Pretty Picture
DESCRIPTION:Lower Level Gallery \n14 October 2026–11 April 2027 \nOpening Reception: 14 October 2026\, 5–8 p.m. \nThis exhibition features work by Erin E. and Philip C. Stead. As the LCVA’s 11th Arts and Letters Exhibition\, the presentation continues the tradition of showcasing the best in children’s literature and illustration in conjunction with the Virginia Children’s Book Festival. \nAs award-winning illustrators\, authors\, and collaborators\, Erin E. and Philip C. Stead’s work speaks to enduring themes of friendship\, cooperation\, and embracing mistakes made in life. The Steads have created over 30 children’s books. Their book\, A Sick Day for Amos McGee (Roaring Brook Press\, 2010)\, won the 2011 Bank Street – Best Children’s Book of the Year and the 2011 Caldecott Medal. Working side-by-side\, respecting each other’s vision\, and intentionally listening\, the couple’s process creates enduring works filled with wonder and delight. Their philosophy for their work is simple: always work to impress each other. \nThe carefully chosen visual elements along with a poet’s economy of words placed on a white ground evokes feelings of calm\, reflection\, and mindfulness. The work embraces the imperfection of human industry\, keeping intact “mistakes” which\, ultimately\, pay reverent homage to revelations afforded in life’s unexpected journeys and challenges. Art\, like life\, doesn’t have to be perfect to have meaning and evoke wonder. \nPictured: Philip C. Stead\, Sometimes It’s Nice to Be Alone\, 2023.
