SUMMARY:LCVA’s Art After Dark Presents a Gallery Talk with Dr. Debra Jean Ambush
DESCRIPTION:Join artist Dr. Debra Jean Ambush for a discussion of her current exhibition\, Letters from Farmville: Reflections on Ancestral Arrival into Descendant Memory. This program will be held on Wednesday\, October 23\, 2024 at the LCVA and is free and open to the public. Doors will open at 5:45 pm for refreshments\, and the program will begin at 6:00 pm. \nIn 1989 Dr. Debra Jean Ambush came to Farmville to help settle an estate for a recently passed family member. In her family’s farm house was a trunk that contained receipts\, papers\, photographs\, and personal correspondence dating back to 1872. For over 30 years these documents\, which are an ancestral connection to the artist\, have served as vital sources of artistic inspiration and interpretation as she seeks to understand her family’s histories\, stories\, and memories. Letters from Farmville: Reflections on Ancestral Arrival into Descendant Memory is a four-part exhibition that visualizes African American family history to illuminate the ways in which memory is constructed\, lost\, and cherished. Alex Grabiec\, the LCVA’s Curator of Exhibitions stated “This will be a wonderful opportunity to meet Dr. Ambush\, take a closer look at the works\, and hear from her.” The exhibition will be on view from September 6\, 2024—January 21\, 2025. Letters from Farmville is made possible in part through the generous sponsorship of Ilsa Loeser and Letterpress Communications. \nAbout LCVA: \nThe Longwood Center for the Visual Arts presents a rotating program of inspiring and conversation-starting exhibitions. Admission to LCVA and its programs is—and always has been—free for all. It is located at the intersection of Main and Third Streets (129 North Main Street) in Farmville\, Virginia. SUMMARY:Bad Kitty Does Not Like Art Museums
DESCRIPTION:Art museums are great! You can see many wonderful things\, the curator exclaimed. \nBad Kitty does not agree. Her dislike of them remained. \nCould a visit change her mind? Would that do? \nDo you want to see another’s point of view? \nEach has a story\, and so do you. \nFor a moment Bad Kitty thought: Okay\, Okay\, but I still don’t see the hullabaloo. \nGoing inside\, the AC was on. So far\, this is pretty cool. \nHer temperament took a break: The paintings are nice\, but that is something I could make. \nInside you’re an artist! The docent explained: \nJuxtapose yourself with the art you see. You can make it\, but so can she. \nKitty thought it over\, how could that be? Seeing something new\, maybe that is the key? \nLots of pieces to view! Something old\, something blue\, and something with a kangaroo! \nMuch to see! So much to learn! What else could we discern? The art from… \nNick Bruel would be cool! \nOpen the doors to the LCVA to see his art. \nPurrfect stories and lessons from the heart. \nQuestions arise and stories unfold\, \nReading his books there is much to behold. \nSuper great pictures worth a Fabergé! \nThank you\, Bad Kitty\, for visiting today. \nUnderstanding your dismay is okay! A good change is underway\, maybe next time we’ll try the ballet? \nVisual art can mend\, pretend\, blend\, defend\, and transcend. \nWould you recommend to a friend? \nXylophone! \nYes! Oh\, that’s wonderful news. \nZoom on over\, and see some new views. \n  \n  \nBad Kitty Does Not Like Art Museums highlights works of art from author and illustrator Nick Bruel. For over twenty years\, his stories have connected with children and adults alike. His whimsical narratives teach valuable life lessons through humor and the curious Bad Kitty. \nThough she wasn’t always a bad cat\, she just didn’t want to eat asparagus\, horseradish\, spinach\, or zucchini. She wanted an assortment of anchovies\, hippo hamburgers\, rhino ravioli\, or shark sushi. She may not have been as patient as she should have been\, but that’s okay. She is learning – she is just a little kitty. \nAnd Bad Kitty grows up\, just like we do. She goes on vacation\, takes a test\, gets a bath\, gets a phone\, and even runs for president. These stories teach that when times get tough\, we figure out ways to persevere and succeed\, or how to handle disappointment. \nBad Kitty Does Not Like Art Museums is an invitation to find your own growth\, revisit something you don’t like\, and have some laughs. The LCVA\, in conjunction with the Virginia Children’s Book Festival\, asks that you don’t claw the curtains\, overturn litter boxes\, or ruin any rugs. \nThis exhibition is the eight iteration of the LCVA’s annual Arts and Letters exhibition series showcasing the best in the art of children’s literature\, which is proudly presented in conjunction with the Virginia Children’s Book Festival. \n  \n \nImage Credit: \nNick Bruel\nBad Kitty Does Not Like Art Museums\n2024 \nInk\, watercolor\, and gouache on multimedia paper.\n7″x5 1/8″\nCourtesy of the artist

SUMMARY:Of Time\, and the Town
DESCRIPTION:Of Time\, and the Town from filmmaker David Ellsworth poetically depicts twenty years of changes and constants in the built environment of Farmville\, Virginia and in the rural areas surrounding it. The film’s super-8 film images bear witness to how everyday locales provide markers of the town’s social evolution. A young couple labors to renovate an abandoned 19th century school and make it their home while the town’s previously shuttered all-Black high school finds new life as a civil rights museum documenting the 1950s student strike that helped integrate the county’s schools. Children grow as one-hundred-year-old oak trees fall. Excerpts from the town’s AM radio station provide a sonic touchstone that complements the film’s evocative sound design. \nThe Longwood Center for the Visual Arts (LCVA) welcomes the community to an opening reception on Friday\, September 6 from 5:30 – 8 pm; early entry for Friends & Partners at 5 pm. This exhibition will be on view from September 6\, 2024—January 21\, 2025. \nAbout LCVA: \nThe Longwood Center for the Visual Arts presents a rotating program of inspiring and conversation-starting exhibitions. SUMMARY:A Way of Life: The Art of Joseph “JB” Allen
DESCRIPTION:A Way of Life: The Art of Joseph “JB” Allen \nOn View: May 31 to August 28\, 2024 \nA Way of Life highlights 58 years of painting from local artist Joseph “JB” Allen. Paintings of nature\, vechiles\, and loving couples speak to larger themes of wonder\, adventure\, and experiencing life with a caring partner. His adventures certainly have perils: getting your cart stuck on train tracks\, being chased by a bull\, or hanging onto the edge of a cliff. But\, these life experiences are also full of joy: riding bikes through the country side\, sitting on the beach\, or dancing with your spouse. \nAllen started making art as a child and continued to paint occasionally as an adult. But\, in the 1980s he stopped\, feeling he wasn’t good at it anymore. However\, since retiring in 2013 (he worked at Centra Southside Hospital from age 17 to 71) he began to make art again. He now averages about a painting a week and works part-time at Hampden-Sydney College. Allen’s imaginative art making shows that stories and memories are essential to a way of life. \n  \nJoseph “JB” Allen\nIt’s so good to see you again\, 2022\nMixed media \n20.75 x 28.75\nCourtesy of the artist \n

SUMMARY:Main Street Museum: On Our Way
DESCRIPTION:Main Street Museum: On Our Way \nSomeone who plays music is a musician. Someone who acts is an actor. And\, someone who makes art is an artist. Often times artists who have not received a formal artistic education are labeled as “self-taught”\, “folk”\, “visionary”\, or “outsider”. While these terms may offer some loose categorization\, they also raise important questions: ‘outside of what?’\, or ‘when or where do you learn?’. These terms often end up excluding artists from important conversations and how experiences can be represented through the visual arts. Minnie Adkins\, Clinton S. Ford\, and Marion Line are all artists whose talents and expressions are unique and full of individual craftsmanship. \nThese three artists’ practices are informed by personal experiences and varied interests. For Adkins the natural world\, biblical stories\, and animals; Ford the memories and experiences serving on the European front during World War II; and for Line the narratives and memories of rural living. Through these pieces pulled from the LCVA’s permanent collection we can witness artistic journeys of internal experiences\ninspired by the external world. \nPictured: \nClinton S. SUMMARY:Art After Dark: Yoga—the Art of Being
DESCRIPTION:LCVA hosts upcoming Art After Dark: Yoga—the Art of Being \nJoin Cosima Smith at the LCVA on Tuesday\, March 26th at 6:00 for a yoga class and discussion about the practice of yoga. This program is completely free of charge and open to the public.\nNo prior yoga experience required. Be sure to wear clothing for movement and bring a yoga mat. \nWhen asked about the workshop\, Cosima stated this program will be a chance for guests “to accept and examine the self through mindful movement\, bringing awareness to the breath\, the body\, the mind\, and all their interactions. We will work on developing a non-judgmental attitude toward the body\, and lean into the teachings of Vedic tradition. In the discussion portion\, we will talk about Yoga as a method of artistic living\, the ways Americans (and the West at large) have co-opted and transformed Yogic practice\, and touch on the intimacies of a developing Yoga practice.” \nCosima Smith is a Farmville native with 15+ years of experience practicing yoga. From an early age\, their natural flexibility drew them to the practice long before their collegiate studies led them to India. After college\, they returned to Dharamsala\, India to study Yoga anatomy\, practice\, and philosophy with Indian teachers who were raised and grew within the tradition. Cosima notes that “yoga is all about recognition and exploration—the ability to dive deeper into the self\, lean into our interpersonal relations\, and offer our support to our community.” \nArt after Dark replaces the formal lecture format normally associated with museums with interdisciplinary activities. The evening gatherings have a relaxed atmosphere that encourages engaging conversation. \nAbout LCVA:\nThe Longwood Center for the Visual Arts presents a rotating program of inspiring and conversation-starting exhibitions. Admission to LCVA and its programs is—and always has been—free for all. It is located at the intersection of Main and Third Streets (129 North Main Street) in Farmville\, Virginia. SUMMARY:Exhibition: Flapper Fashion of the 1920s
DESCRIPTION:With the end of World War I in 1918 came great social\, economic\, and cultural changes that reverberated throughout America in the 1920s. The rejection of social formalities and the rise of women’s independence and individuality directly affected women’s fashion. Gone were the heavily corseted and petticoated silhouettes seen at the turn of the century\, replaced by simplistic tubular\, shapeless\, and androgynous garments in economical fabrics. While simplicity in construction typified both day and eveningwear\, the latter were embellished with ornate beadwork\, sequins\, and embroidery\, culminating in the iconic flapper dresses for which the decade is remembered today. This exhibit showcases over 30 period dresses worn by the everyday American woman between 1920 and 1929\, and places them in the social and cultural contexts of the day. \nFlapper Fashion of the 1920s is guest curator by Ashley Webb ‘07 from bustle textiles.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Keith Kissee Memorial
DESCRIPTION:To collect is to remember. \nPeople collect shells\, coins\, baseball cards\, and often art. Each object can instill unique and deep emotional memories for the collector. For Keith Kissee collecting art was a fundamental passion that lasted over 30 years. In many ways this collection is a remembrance of Keith Kissee – his spirit\, friendship\, and generosity. He saw the beauty of the American landscape\, the powerful connection to hard work and farm life\, the majesty of cattle\, and the affirming strength of the arts. His collection of art is largely from American artists from the Depression and the New Deal eras. This period of art reflects hard times and the perpetual reliance of individuals and communities. \nThis exhibition invites you to remember what is hard in life\, and what gives strength and hope. Through Kissee’s collection\, his eyes and passion\, you can consider what is near and dear to your\nown heart and what you collect\, or remember.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: The Adventures of Timothy Basil Ering
DESCRIPTION:Discover Frog Belly Rat Bone and Other Adventures – Acclaimed Children’s Lit Illustrator/Author Timothy Basil Ering at Longwood Center for the Visual Arts \nThe New York Times bestselling author-illustrator Timothy Basil Ering will appear at a reception in his honor at the Longwood Center for the Visual Arts (LCVA) on Wednesday\, October 11\, 5:30 – 8 pm. The Adventures of Timothy Basil Ering is the seventh iteration of the LCVA’s annual Arts and Letters exhibition series showcasing the best in the art of children’s literature\, which is proudly presented in conjunction with the Virginia Children’s Book Festival. \nEring\, best known for his illustrations for Kate DiCamillo’s Newbery Medal winning The Tale of Despereaux\, is an expansively creative artist whose work has been described as equal parts Dr. Suess and Michelangelo. His exuberant picture book\, The Story of Frog Belly Rat Bone has been in print over a decade and was even adapted for stage in Los Angeles. The Almost Fearless Hamilton Squidlegge and The Unexpected Love Story of Alfred Fiddleduckling are among his more popular children’s books. \nBrimming with sincerity and whimsy\, Ering creates worlds full of characters\, wonder and adventure. “Though written for children\, these stories are by no means only for them\,” remarks LCVA curator of exhibitions Alex Grabiec. “Ering writes for children\, but with grown-ups in mind.” \nThe artist is quite a character himself\, and his journey to become a best-selling children’s author has been – as the exhibition title suggests – an incredible adventure. Many of his works reference the ocean\, an ever-present influence in his life. Ering grew up on Cape Cod where he counted painting his family’s rental cottages among his chores. The layered\, tactile surfaces of his work are heavily influenced by years of scraping and repainting wood trim worn by the salt air. \nLater Ering went to sea while serving as a helmsman in the United States Navy on the USS Kitty Hawk. His first illustration commission – The Diary of Victor Frankenstein – was not a children’s book. His work for this classic horror novel was created at sea over five months while Ering was sailing from Florida to Guatemala with his father. “The works he created while at sea are mind boggling\,” Rachel Talent Ivers\, LCVA’s executive director said. “These drawings were created under challenging circumstances\, challenges that are reflected in the raw and ominous atmosphere of the completed book.” \nFor Ering\, the ability to reach thousands of people through his work is one of the most exciting parts of his development as an artist and author. “Most rewarding of all my adventures is having the opportunity to inspire people around the world with good\, motivating messages contained in my picture books\, that I found important while I was growing up\,” Ering says. \nThe Adventures of Timothy Basil Ering is a quest for all ages. It is on view October 6\, 2023 – February 18\, 2024. A reception with the artist will take place Wednesday\, October 11\, 5:30 – 8 pm with early entry for LCVA Friends & Partners at 5 pm. The exhibition is curated by Alex Grabiec \, and made possible in part by Nash and Mindy Osborn\, North Street Press Club\, and the Walter J. Payne Foundation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: I Am A Man (Photographs of the Civil Rights Movement)
DESCRIPTION:The 1960–1970 decade was a momentous time for the civil rights movement in the American South. Together\, they provide a vivid visual story of the evolution of the civil rights movement and shed light on the movement’s integration in daily living in the American South. \nA Program of ExhibitsUSA\, a national division of Mid-America Arts Alliance and the National Endowment for the Arts. \nSponsored by Robin and Ellery Sedgwick

SUMMARY:Reflections of the Heart: Eldridge Bagley – 50 Years of Painting
DESCRIPTION:Eldridge Bagley began painting fifty years ago while he was still living with his parents on their farm in rural Lunenburg County\, Virginia. Bagley often depicts the substance and meaning of a vanishing small-town and agrarian lifestyle. Relationships with family\, friends\, neighbors\, religion\, and the land are important themes in this retrospective exhibition. \n“I can’t live in the past\,” Bagley told a news writer\, “but I do know . . .that there are traditions\, convictions\, and values that never change and are worth preserving.” He never set out to be a historian\, but his audience recognized intuitively that “history is a genre of memory.” His artistic journey over the course of the past fifty years affirms that he is truly a historian of the heart. \nOpening Reception: December 9\, 2022 5:30 to 8 p.m. with Early Entry for Friends & Partners at 5 p.m. \nReflections of the Heart: Eldridge Bagley – 50 Years of Painting is made possible by our sponsors\, Brad Watson and Davenport & Co.\, Farmville. LCVA exhibitions and programs are made possible through the generous support of the Wells Fargo Foundation\, the Walter J. Payne Foundation\, Anne Carter & Walter R.
