Brittany is a painting major at Longwood. Her work in Point of Departure focuses on her place of residence during her time at Longwood and memories associated with homes.
"Every person will describe their home differently. The house painted in oil on canvas, Greenhouse, has been my “home” and a large part of my college career. The handmade bag has the seven continents cut out of shibori dyed fabric and hand stitched on the front. The map includes a small stitch mark over Virginia. On the front, there is another piece of fabric that was marbled and cut into the shape of a hummingbird. The hummingbird represents those who leave home, for it returns to where it was born or where its family is. The marking on Virginia is a reminder to always return home. Together, the map and the hummingbird symbolize wherever you might be in life to turn around every once in a while and remember how you got where you are now. It is also a reminder that wherever your family is you can always come back to visit those people who will love and support you. The greenhouse has, and will continue to be filled with, memories for many people who have the chance to call it home."
Point of Departure is on display until May 11.
